Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg opened yesterday (7/31/09) at the Pipers Alley on North Avenue & the Landmark Renaissance in Highland Park.  For more venues, visit the website.

REVIEW: Tillie Edelstein was the creator of “Molly Goldberg,” one of the most beloved matriarchs in the history of American popular culture. Reinventing herself as “Gertrude Berg,” Tillie won an Emmy and a Tony, sold a cookbook and an autobiography, and ended her professional life as one of television’s best-paid variety show guests.

Award-winning director Aviva Kempner tells all this and more in her new documentary film Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg. Kempner’s description of Berg’s mercurial rise, juxtaposing a wealth of clips with new talking head interviews, is masterful. She succeeds in bringing back a Jewish-American heroine now by and large forgotten.

There’s one particular quote from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg way at the end that provides a perfect punctuation point, so stay for the credits or you’ll miss it!
